How to Stage Your Home During a Holiday

Selling a home can be one of the most stressful events in someone's life, but layer in selling during an already busy holiday season, and you've got an extra dose of headache.  But selling your home during a holiday season can be advantageous, as it presents an opportunity to tastefully add cute staging touches that can add to the charm of your home.

Here are some of our tried-and-true seasonal staging tips:

Create a cozy vibe. The less-is-more philosophy of home staging may tempt you to eliminate holiday cheer this year. But a few subtle touches like a bowl of pinecones, an evergreen wreath, some small pumpkins on the fireplace mantle will add some warmth to your home.

Complement your existing color scheme. Before you start unraveling those holiday lights, make sure your collection matches your current decor.  If you’ve got an earth-toned color scheme, accent with rich tones like cranberries, evergreen plants and gold hues.

Accentuate the positive lightly: Too many bells or hanging bats may draw attention away from your home's best features, or even block a beautiful view. Integrate small holiday touches that don't interfere with your home, such as a small pumpkin decorated vase.

Go light on lights: As cute as they are, avoid large inflatables or colorful lights. Instead, use simple string lighting to play up your home’s architecture or draw attention to landscaping.

Avoid religious-centric decorations: Leave the life-sized Nativity scene in storage this year, because overtly religious flourishes may be off-putting to some buyers. Focus on the neutral, such as small a small snowman key rack.
